Here are scenes and information about Siena, the wonderful Mediaeval Tuscan hill town which centuries ago was defeated by Firenze but survived to preserve to this day its heritage of culture, architecture, art. It is famous for its yearly (sometimes more often), fiercely competitive horse race, the Palio (run to select a winning contrada neighborhood), which takes place in the beautiful Piazza del Campo, in front of the Palazzo Publico, perhaps the oldest town hall on Earth. The actual race, where whichever horse crosses the finish line first wins - with or without rider - is preceded by a festival of flag throwers, knights in armor, and drummers.
